Chatham Town scored the first and last goals of the game to take a point at Romford last Wednesday, but that point was overshadowed by a serious injury to Corey Holder which seems likely to rule him out for some time.

Chatham made the better start, and Corey Holder’s header from a corner went just wide with only six minutes played. Austin Gacheru went close a minute later, but within five minutes Chatham were in the lead. Alfie May got on the end of a long pass and chipped it over the goalkeeper, and the Romford defence could only stand and watch as the ball went into the net. An Andy Constable shot was comfortably saved moments later, but midway through the half Romford’s top scorer Richardson equalised from close range.

Romford had a goal disallowed on 41 for offside, while at the other end Alfie May went close from a narrow angle and might have been fouled in the process.  But Romford took the ball straight to the other end, only for a shot to be badly mishit.  Unfortunately, it was during this move that Corey Holder went down injured.  It initially looked as his stomach had taken a knock, but we now know that it was more serious than that.  In fact, he suffered an injury to the ribs which in turn caused his spleen to be ruptured, and he had to undergo emergency surgery to remove the organ.  Let us hope that he is well again soon.

Early in the second half Austin Gacheru headed wide, while Andy Constable had two goals ruled out for offside within the space a minute.  That could have been costly, because a well taken goal by Seymour following a free kick gave Romford the lead on 61. The game became fractious and the referee showed a number of cards, but Chatham deservedly equalised with ten minutes remaining, Alfie May again the scorer.  The goalkeeper came charging out of his area but failed to get to the ball, and May was left to fire into an empty net from the edge of the area.

Constable completed his hat trick of disallowed goals as the game moved into added time, but there were no goals in the seven minutes added on by the referee and so the teams had to settle for one point each.
