Two first half goals from Billy Bennett were enough to give Chatham a 2-1 win over East Preston.

East Preston forced a corner in the opening seconds of the game, but within two minutes Chatham won a corner of their own. That corner was cleared only as far as Bennett just inside the area, and his strike gave Chatham an early lead.

Chatham were two up within 15 minutes played. They won two corners in quick succession, and from the second of them the ball was played back to Bennett on the edge of the area, and another good strike gave hime his second goal of the afternoon.

He could have a hat trick before half time, although East Preston forced two good saves from Jack Bradshaw before the interval.

Bennett and Alfie May both went thin inches in the opening minutes of the second half, but after that East Preston started to domminate for long periods.

They pulled a goal back on 61 when Charlie Oatway’s free kick from just outside the area on the right took a deflection off a Chatham player and gave Bradshaw no chance.

A minute later, and the East Preston goalkeeper came very close to punching the ball into his own net when there was no serious danger, but a defender rescued him by clearing off the line.

East Preston looked dangerous whenever they had the ball, but twice they missed badly and there was more good work by Bradshaw.

At the other end, Alfie May was behind most of the chances created by Chatham, while sub Travis Jackson cane closest to scoring after receiving the ball from May.

As the game went into injury time, East Preston realised that the equaliser wasn’t coming, and during the five added minutes it was Chatham who had most of the possession as they held on for an 2-1 win.
