Austin Gacheru was back in the goals as we recorded a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Ware on Tuesday night.

Heavy traffic on the M25 meant that Ware arrived late, and didn’t get as much warm up time as they’d have wanted, and they were a goal down before they’d had a chance to draw breath.  That goal came after eight minutes when Matt Solly’s cross found Austin Gacheru, whose deft header gave the goalkeeper no chance.

Ade Yusuff looked to be held back when one on one with the keeper three minutes later, but no penalty was awarded.  Even so, we were two up by the time Ware started to get into the game.  The second goal came on 25, when Kieran McCann found himself with an aerial ball to control and only the keeper to beat.  He did that by heading over the keeper, rounding him, and putting the ball into an empty net.

For the last fifteen minutes of the first half though, Ware dominated the game.  Chatham looked a little casual in defence, and it was only because two shots were mishit and a third hit the post that we retained our 2-0 lead into half time.

A Matt Solly shot early in the second half was well saved, and then ten minutes into the half we won a free kick when Yusuff must have been fouled mere millimeters outside the penalty area.  Gacheru and Yusuff both had chances, but it wasn’t until the 77th minute that we added to our lead.  Yusuff took the ball right down to the goal line, a yard to the left of goal, before crossing to Gacheru for his second deftly headed goal of the night.

By now, Ware knew that it was not to be their night and we totally dominated the closing period.  There was a curious incident on 81 when the Ware keeper did well to get to a McCann shot.  He earned applause for deflecting the ball out of play, and was as surprised as anyone when a goal kick was given.  A Yusuff effort was cleared off the line and McCann went close as time ran out, but the 3-0 final scoreline was a reasonable reflection of our dominance.

Ware have changed their chairman, changed their manager, and changed most of their team over the course of the season, and their new look squad should be good enough to avoid relegation.  But it simply wasn’t good enough to beat Chatham Town on Tuesday night, and we have now lost only one game out of the last fourteen.
