Match Report

Referee: Mr D Cook     Attendance: 75

A late, late equaliser meant that Chatham were forced to settle for one point at Barkingside on Monday night.

Chatham wore an unusual strip for this game, coupling red and black shirts with blue shorts and orange socks.  It wasn’t a great look, and it wasn’t a great start when Barkingside had the ball in the net after just two minutes – but an offside flag went up, and gave Chatham the chance to start again.

Lewis Knight and Austin Gacheru both had chances within the next ten minutes, and then on 17 we went ahead.  There seemed no obvious danger as Chatham passed the ball around down the right, but all of a sudden a Matt Solly volley from outside the area was in the back of the net.  This was Solly’s first goal of the season.

With half an hour played, the game seemed to swing even more in our favour when Barkingside’s Oxby saw a straight red for a stamp on Gacheru.  But as so often, that wasn’t quite what happened – and before half time they had capitalised on a missed tackle and equalised.

The early part of the second half was bad tempered, and there were some curious decisions from the officiais.  Gacheru dribbled through the area on the hour and then went to ground in the area, but no penalty was awarded.  A long clearance after that incident put Barkingside in shooting position but they missed badly, and for a while it was Barkingside who saw more of the ball.  But that changed with twenty minutes to go, and it was Chatham who had most of the possession for the rest of the game.  Yusuff went close when he collected a ball dropped by the goalkeeper, Lee Hales had a shot well saved, and then on 77, Yusuff was sent sprawling and the referee pointed to the spot.  Yusuff took the penalty himself, but it was saved.  It was cleared only as far as Kieran McCann ten yards from goal though, and McCann blasted it into the net to give Chatham back the lead.

There was a bizarre incident on 83 when Barkingside appealed for a penalty.  When they didn’t get it, a player who had been substituted got up from the bench and called the referee something that we cannot print here.  He immediately saw Barkingside’s second red card of the evening.

But three minutes into injury time Barkingside won a corner after Jack Bradshaw was adjudged to have carried the ball over the goal line.  They scored from the corner, and earned themselves a point in the process.  Still, we collected 25 points from 10 games in the month of March; only title challengers Witham Town did better in the month.
