Match Report

Referee: Mr G Read     Attendance: 77

Dereham Town’s first ever visit to Chatham produced an entertaining game, and a game which was all the better because we won it!

A long distance shot from Matt Solly went over the bar with just six minutes played, and soon after that Kieran McCann shot wide after beating the goalkeeper twice.  A goal was surely coming, and it did come after we won a free kick on half way with 13 minutes played. The free kick was played into the area, and no one fully controlled the ball as it rebounded around the penalty area.  Eventually Austin Gacheru slid in and found the net from close range.

Midway through the half a long range shot from McCann won us a corner, but nothing came from it.  Although it took them some time to get into the game, by the end of the first half it was the visitors from Norfolk who were creating more chances.  Jack Bradshaw dealt well with everything he had to though, so we went in at half time one up.

Early in the second half, Dereham twice shot across the face of goal while Chatham created more chances but too many ended when players ran offside.  Ade Yusuff thought he had doubled our lead on 65 when his shot hit the crossbar and bounced down, but the referee did not award a goal.  Yusuff had another chance two minutes later, this one fiercely hit from close range, but goalkeeper Viner did well to turn it away for a corner.

Dereham equalised on 78 minutes, Bussens the scorer from close range.  Worse was to follow when a well taken goal by Bammant gave them the lead four minutes later – but that lead was shortlived, because Gacheru scored his second goal of the night just two minutes later, equally well taken from 15 yards out.  So 2-2 with six minutes plus added time remaining, and all to play for.

Both teams continued to play for the win, and two minutes into added time it was Chatham who secured it. Yusuff’s cross from the right found McCann, whose first touch shot rocketed into the net and sent the home supporters wild.  Dereham sent even the goalkeeper forward when they won a corner five minutes over time, but nothing came of the corner and Chatham secured three hard earned points.
