Leading 9-1 after the two away legs, it never seemed likely that Chatham Town would lose to Erith and Belvedere on away goals. Unfortunately that isn’t quite how things work in the Isthmian League, and we were forced to settle for one point after a rather frustrating evening.

The keeper could only bat away an Alfie May cross in the first minute, but Chatham were unable to reach the loose ball. A Greg Benbow shot went wide on 11, and a minute later Ade Yusuff hit the post from distance after spotting the keeper out of position.

But even though Chatham had made all the running, it was Erith and Belvedere who took an unexpected lead after 13 minutes. The scorer was Christian-Law from the edge of the area, and his shot appeared to take the Chatham defence by surprise.

Erith could have gone two up after 25 minutes when Jack Bradshaw slipped, but fortunately the shot was cleared off the line and within two minutes Chatham equalised. Ade Yusuff was the scorer from a narrow angle on the left, following an excellent pass by Alfie May.  Two good saves from Bradshaw ensured that Erith did not score again in the first half, while Chatham might have had a penalty two minutes before half time when Yusuff went down under challenge. The linesman certainly thought so and waved his flag vigorously, but the Ukrainian referee decided against.

The first action of the second half saw a Brad Potter header go just wide following a corner. But there were few serious chances at either end for the next forty minutes before the game came back to life in its final minutes. Erith were down to ten men because of an injury after they had made all three substitutions, and Chatham pushed forward looking for a late winner.

A corner on 86 minutes came to nothing, and a James Alderman shot on the stroke of 90 went just wide. Six minutes of injury time were played though, and in the third of those minutes Chatham might once again have had a penalty. A through ball forward found Yusuff on the edge of the area, and he went to ground close to the penalty spot after being in contact with the Erith goalkeeeper. Once again though, the referee decided that this did not warrant the award of a penalty.  Yusuff had a shot on target seconds before the final whistle, but it was comfortably saved and so the game ended with one goal each and one point each
